Easter in style at Baqueira Beret
Over 90,000 skiers had a great time at the Val d’Aran and Valls d’Àneu resort between Saturday 24 March and Sunday 1 April. The weather was changeable but all the skiable kilometres and ski lifts were available on most days during the Easter holidays.
An unusual Easter due to its winter temperatures led to exceptional snow quality at Baqueira Beret and depths that instead of decreasing continued to grow high up in the mountains to reach 3 metres.
Over 90,000 skiers were able to enjoy these unbeatable conditions from Saturday 24 March to Sunday 1 April. The busiest day was Friday 30 March when there were 14,333 people on the runs.
The Val d’Aran and Valls d’Àneu resort was open every day during the holidays with an average of 135 skiable kilometres and practically all its ski lifts in operation every day. This meant the skiers who came to the station were able to spread out seamlessly across the 2,166-hectare open skiable area at Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua.
The free 7-km cross-country skiing circuit at Beret was open during the long holiday week and the snowpark reopened after a few days of remodelling due to the heavy snowfalls. The Clot der Os Funpark at Beret continued to be popular with children with its layout featuring reproductions of distinctive local animals dotted among the trees and slopes. Furthermore a new tubing course and leisure activities were set up in the beginners’ area at Beret which were a great success, packed out with people who were able to enjoy attractions other than simply skiing and snowboarding with family and friends.
It was changeable week in terms of weather, with severe winter conditions on some days down to -11º C yet also spring days blessed by lots of sun and a pleasant atmosphere that encouraged visitors to flock to the resort’s numerous terraces. In short, an unusual Easter when on many mornings skiers were able to enjoy up to 15 cm of freshly fallen winter-quality snow.
In terms of events the atmosphere in Beret Stadium and the Era Marmota Snowpark was outstanding. The Stadium was the venue for the lively fun races run by the clubs which train at the resort including MAC, Ainhoa Ski Club, COPOS, CEVA and CAEI. Plus the General Council of Aran race was held on the last Saturday in March and the freestyle Expression Session Baqueira in the snowpark open to skiers and snowboarders took place on Sunday 1 April.
The resort’s restaurants were also open all week, including the Ox Festival tasting event held in the Moët Winter Lounge at Orri on 30 and 31 March. The rest of the thematic venues such as the Refugio San Miguel, the 5J Grill Baqueira, the Borda Lobato and the Wine Bar by Viña Pomal in the Montarto hotel attracted large numbers of visitors. The new Bosque Cafeteria at Baqueira 1800 continued to be a great sensation, not only due to its free flow self-service system but also because of its huge terrace which was the star of Easter this year.
As for events in the valley, the 8th Pyrenades festival was held at Salardú featuring cultural and nature activities to publicise the Pyrenees for mountain lovers and others looking to learn more about them.
The Baqueira Beret resort is to close the season next Sunday 8 April.
